ABOUT THE PROJECT
HvA2030’s mission is to support the evolution of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) to a resilient future-proof metropolitan university of applied sciences.
As part of the project, this space was created with the aim to enable the HvA ecosystem, its partners and citizens to freely share knowledge and experiences, raise awareness on important topics, and join hands in order to achieve a preferable future for all of us.
In February 2022, five researchers and designers met at the Digital Society School –
a HvA community of learners, creators and designers ready to have an impact on society and its global transformation.
All with different backgrounds, from different countries, but with the same ambition: disrupting education.

With Speculative Design as a tool, the task was to envision HvA as a resilient, future-proof and open knowledge institution as part of (metropolitan) Amsterdam - a city as a learning playground.
Speculative Design was the overarching method of the project.
A design approach that is concerned with future design proposals of a critical nature, questioning current challenges and envisioning a preferable far future.
The hard part?
Translating the future vision to the now in order to make concrete steps forward.

The project consisted of three major phases: Explore (discover and define current and future context and challenges), Imagine (translate challenges and context to 2030) and Make (prototype and make the future tangible).
HvA2030 implements its mission by:

âž” Providing scalable and practical guiding principles which nurture a rich stimulating learning environment where individuals become life-long learners;

âž” Fostering a strong (symbiotic) relationship between the university and the city of Amsterdam while leveraging the city as a learning playground; and
​
âž” Embracing collective values that lead to disruptive social innovation.

Our research is not oriented towards solutions, it is about paradigm shifts necessary to take a step towards a preferable and different future.
