Knowledge Institutions Map

Updated: Jun 22, 2022

Based on a careful Literature Review session and research, the HvA2030 project’s working definition of Knowledge Institutions is as follows:

“Knowledge Institutions are purpose-driven collectives focused on researching, developing, documenting, transferring and applying knowledge to promote societal empowerment and to serve public interests in collaboration with other initiatives.”

This definition was created using many findings and insights gleaned from reviewing numerous articles, books, and contemporary blogs in order to create a relevant interpretation for today and the purposes of our project. Most of the concepts in our definition are supported by sources and references.

We decided to map out Knowledge Institutions in Amsterdam based on our working definition.

Our Knowledge Institution Map depicts where knowledge can be found in Amsterdam and how it affects the HvA in general. To make it easier to find information, this is organized using various interconnected layers.

Some of the Knowledge Institutions that we identified are Universities, Knowledge Centers within Universities, Research Centers, Municipality Institutions, Theaters, Museums and Co-operative Associations.

Our knowledge map is structured as a sphere with four layers, each representing the level of impact a knowledge institution will have on HvA’s present and future operations. The HvA's activities in terms of policies and collaboration are directly influenced by the innermost layers. The sphere is further divided into three sections in which various knowledge institutions are classified as industry, government, or public facilities.

The Municipality of Amsterdam, for example, is placed on the second layer of the sphere on the government section because our research shows that it has a high impact on the HvA as an institution. Why? HvA’s policies may be directly and indirectly influenced by the Municipality's politics.

Let us know how you define a Knowledge Institution, and keep in mind that this map is intended to spark discussions and is not limited to the Knowledge Institutions

listed on it.

Collaborate with us in identifying more Knowledge Institutions in Amsterdam!

The more Knowledge Institutions that are identified, the larger the networks of knowledge creation, sharing, use, growth, and collaboration are formed.
